Yoga appears in NHS guidance as a way to build both strength and flexibility. This page summarises what the NHS says. It is general information, not medical advice.
Where yoga fits
The NHS page on strength and flexibility lists yoga under muscle-strengthening activities, under activities that build leg strength and balance to help prevent falls, and under flexibility activities. Tai chi is listed for balance and coordination, and Pilates as a flexibility activity.
How much
- Do muscle-strengthening activity on at least 2 days a week, working all the major muscle groups.
- For strength exercises, aim for 8 to 12 repetitions per exercise, with at least 2 sets and ideally 3 for greater benefit.
- The page gives no set frequency or duration for flexibility work.
Starting out
The NHS advises starting gradually and building up over a period of weeks. Its separate flexibility routines suit people who have not exercised for a while and ask you to stretch only as far as is comfortable. If you have a health problem, an injury or are pregnant, ask a health professional before starting a new class.
